Teshuva and excuses are two opposites, Teshuva means admiting guilt. A person pacifies himself with excuses but he is creating a road block to Teshuva.

One of the ‘taamei hamitzvo’ of Vidui is so that a person verbalizes that he sinned. Like this he is less likely to fall into he trap of excuses. Someone that is full of excuses can’t say the words “I sinned”.
